The Bachelor of Commerce is an undergraduate degree that typically takes three years of study to complete. Graduates can articulate onto a Postgraduate Diploma, cognate Honours Qualification or Masters BCom Degree, following the completion of their undergraduate degree.

About the Bachelor of Commerce

The modules covered in a BCom form the foundational theories of business and are focused on modules specific to economics, business management and finance. Students are advised to select a particular stream to follow based on their interest, such as Accounting or Business Management.

A graduate can work in a number of diverse environments, from multinational corporations to government departments or even run their own company.

What are the requirements to study a BCom Degree?

In order to qualify for admission into an undergraduate Bachelor of Commerce degree programme, you will need the following:
  • A National Senior Certificate or National Certificate Vocational with mathematics or,
  • An equivalent NQF Level 4 qualification with proven proficiency in English or,
  • A Higher Certificate, an Advanced Certificate or Diploma
In order to qualify for admission to an Honours or Masters Degree in Commerce, you will need to have completed an appropriate Bachelor’s Degree or Advanced Diploma. For admission into a Masters Degree in Commerce you need to have completed a relevant Honours Degree or Postgraduate Diploma. Outcomes of a BCom

  • Apply basic mathematical and statistical skills necessary for a range of applications in the fields of economics, accounting, marketing, finance and/or supply chain management
  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the major theories relating to the general study of commerce
  • Develop an understanding of domestic and international economics, and be able to compare the international context of these issues using a critical lens
  • The ability to apply practical solutions to organisational, financial or economic challenges based on the current academic research and best practice
  • An understanding of the concepts, principles and theories as it relates to their specific field of study
