External Examiners – Honours Research Report and Masters Dissertation : Durban

Core purpose:

Assess Honours research reports/ Masters dissertations and provide sufficient feedback relating to content and structure.

Core functions:

  • Assess the research report/dissertation according to the MANCOSA assessment rubric and/or according to best academic practice and provide detailed guidance on how to implement changes.
  • Provide advice about the nature of the research and the expected standard in order to achieve the degree for which the student is aiming.
  • Return the examined research report/dissertation and complete the SurveyMonkey report within 3 days of receiving the document.
  • Upon request, provide additional justification and/or insight for specific grading of a research report/dissertation.


  • A minimum of a relevant Master’s degree (Honours Examination)
  • A minimum of a relevant Doctoral degree (Masters Examination)

Experience and skills:

  • At least 5 years’ experience in Higher Education (with a focus on Business Administration, Public Administration, Supply Chain Management, Human Resources and/or Marketing Management)
  • Must have supervised at least 10 Masters level students
  • Postgraduate research examination experience
  • Scholarly activity in the subject area (e.g. conference papers and peer-reviewed articles and/or books)
  • At least 2 years’ industry/ practitioner experience in a relevant Business/ Public Administration field (advantageous)
  • Consulting and project involvement in relevant subject area (advantageous)
  • Membership with relevant professional association/s (advantageous)
